Before Spray Tanning Session:
Exfoliate your skin and remove body hair 24 hours before your tanning session. Exfoliating your body is a very important step before tanning because it will remove the top layer of dead epidermis cells. It works best if you buy some exfoliating glove or use grainy type of products
Come to your appointment with your skin clean and dry. Do not apply any body lotion, deodorant, perfume, oils or makeup before your tanning appointment. They can affect tan development
Wear dark, loose fitting clothing (yes sweatpants, NO jeans) and sandals to your appointment. Disposable undergarments are available if needed, or if you would like, you may choose to wear your own or a dark bathing suit
Do not wear wool, nylon or silk during or after your tanning session for at least 8 hours as bronzer may react with these fabrics and could cause staining
Style your hair in a hair clip or ponytail so it will be off your face and neck. Hairnets are available if needed
Remove your contact lenses and jewelry before being sprayed. If it is raining, bring an umbrella and protective shoes so the rain will not affect the bronzer on your body
Exfoliate your tan off thoroughly before you attend to your next airbrush tanning service
If you had a Standard Airbrush Tanning service, do not shower at least 10 hours after your new beautiful spray tan. If you had an Express Airbrush Tanning service, wait 2 hours for a Light color, 3 hours for a Medium color and 4 hours for a Dark color. When you do shower use just warm water, a dark "color guide" pigment (bronzer) will rinse off but your true sunless color will remain for days. Use gentle shower products on your next showers.
Avoid high impact activities for 6 to 8 hours
Product is water soluble if solution comes of on garments wash within 24 hours
Do not do any harsh exfoliation treatments- if you do your tan will slough off with the dead skin cells and fade significantly
Moisturize with a specialty tan extender product daily. Or use a non-scented gentle body moisturizer. Heavy perfumed, oil based moisturizers can break down your new color faster
Excessive hot showers, steam and chlorine can fade your color quicker
Lightly shave only when needed
Use Norvell Prolong Sunless Color Extending Moisturizer to freshen up and prolong your beautiful tan
Maintaining your Tan:
To maintain your tan make sure that your skin is always moisturized. Your tan can last from 7 to 10 days. Using the wrong products can fade your tan faster. Here is a list of commonly used body care products that can have a detrimental effect on a spray tan. This is not all-inclusive. Not everyone will have a problem with these items. This is only a guide.
The following products can lighten or make a sunless tan blotchy:
A women’s tan may develop differently during various hormonal changes (ovulation, menstruation, pregnancy) It may be streaky, patchy, fade worse, or produce lighter or no color
AHA products (Alpha Hydroxy Acids -Glycolic, Lactic, Malic, Citric and Tartaric acids)
Anti-acne products that exfoliate, or dry the skin- Accutane, and Salicylic acid, can affect tan fading. Skin also peels, which can look unacceptable, especially with a tan. Antibiotics or other medications that affect your skin, can also affect your tan
Anti-aging products that "renew" "refresh" or otherwise exfoliate skin
Band-Aid or adhesive tape applied to skin will pull the "tan" off
Bar soaps, especially deodorant, or antibacterial varietiesv BHA Products (Beta Hydroxy Acids-salicylic acid)
Body hair bleach products will bleach the tan, non bleach skin lighteners are fine
Bore type adhesive facial strips, or “peel-off” masks
Bug spray, perfumes, body sprays when sprayed directly onto skin, can remove or fade the tan. Instead, spray clothing, or spray a "cloud" of spray that you can walk through, instead of directly onto skin
Dove soap, and Dove Shower gel, Curel lotions will fade a tan faster, on some people
Facial masks and exfoliating scrubs
Hair Inhibiting Lotions (Jergens etc.) tend to make a sunless tan yellow
If you exercise and sweat heavily your tan can fade faster, especially in body fold areas. (arm bends, knee bends, between breasts etc.)
In winter skin is often very dry, and tan will fade faster. Switch to twice daily moisturizer use. Use a lotion after showering on damp skin. Try a heavier body cream, or butter, just before bed. Butter can also be used twice daily. Regular light exfoliation can be helpful
Makeup remover cleaning products, or oils used to clean away eye makeup
Pat dry in the shower, don’t rub
People with oily skin tend to develop a lighter tan than people with dry skin. The oils can coat the skin, dry skin absorbs more products faster, so can look darker
Retin-A type products (Retin-A, Renova, Tazorac, Tretinoin)- all will cause faster fading
Shaving exfoliates skin, so fades tan. Use a sharp clean razor, with a lubricating product, A dull razor scrapes off more skin and "tan". An electric razor or epilator will fade tan less
Submersion in hot tub or swimming pool (an application of a thick waterproof lotion sun block helps-try Blue Lizard Sport lotion) Even a long hot bath can all affect the "tan" on some people
Sweating feet inside shoes or behind knees and arm bends can fade a tan faster, or make the color guide look greenish or yellowish
Toners containing Alcohols or Witch Hazel in the top three ingredients listed can lighten tan
Use of a loofa, scrub, mitt, etc. for daily washing. (Use a soft washcloth or "soft” poof for daily use)
Wax or Depilatory hair removal products (Nair, Veet, Neet etc)
